Team Lotus

Gérard Ducarouge was able to design the team’s 1984 challenger, the 95T, from a clean sheet of paper, without having to recycle tubs from previous designs

  • It featured a new design of carbon-Kevlar monocoque
  • The Renault V6 featuring two Garrett AiResearch turbochargers
  • 1.5-litre, Renault EF4 V6 Turbo
  • Horsepower: 750bhp
  • Weight: 540kg
  • Top speed: 201mph
  • Drivers: Mansell, De Angelis
  • The engine was mated to an ‘LB’ gearbox featuring Hewland FGA five-speed internals in a Lotus casing
  • As refuelling was banned for the 1984 season, while the maximum fuel allowance was reduced to 220 litres, requiring engines to be more fuel efficient and drivers to be more careful with their right foot if they were to make it to the end of a race
  • Chassis 95T/4 made its debut in a tyre test in April 1984 at Zolder, with Nigel Mansell driving
  • The first race weekend for the car, with Elio de Angelis driving, was at Dijon for the French Grand Prix
  • Its final appearance came at a very unusual venue for a Formula 1 car in a test at Daytona with Elio doing the driving
